A part of the WID Business Plan is also to address the social issues of homelessness as this impacts on both the cleaning and safety in the area. At one stage it was estimated that 25% of the cleaning was related to the people sleeping on the streets. Also a large percentage of the security operation was addressing antisocial behaviour (drinking and drunk in public, urinating and defecating on the streets as well being involved in minor opportunistic crime.)

The senior security officer’s role includes assistance with the management of the street people. This involves interviews, assessment and co operation with the Street People with the aim of repatriation, referring to shelters or health care facilities.

The successes have been the reduction of numbers sleeping on the streets by +/-70%.

We work closely with the Wynberg Night Shelter, their social worker and fieldworker.

We are also supporting the Protea Subcouncils Give Responsibly campaign where public are requested to give meal vouchers rather than cash to those asking for money for food.
